The wolves are running...

The countdown to Christmas has officially begun as I have started the annual ritual of Christmas viewing. Among the various Christmas films, one thing I have watched every Christmas since I can remember is the dramatisation of John Masefield's Box of Delights.

The six-part series was originally aired in 1984 with the last episode being shown on Christmas Eve. Shortly after we bought the BBC videos in Ely and my brother and I watched them every year until I left home. I carried on the tradition on my own and roped my husband into watching them too.
The story follows the exploits of a young boy, Kay Harker, who finds himself drawn into a world of magic and danger when he encounters an old Punch and Judy man.

From one musical extreme to the other...

A weekend of music, very different music!

On Friday night we went to see DJ Shadow at the UEA which was a great night with a really good atmosphere. I only knew three or four tunes but had a great time. Couldn't really see much of his projections as the venue was so packed and we were near the back but it didn't spoil the enjoyment. I did have a dance but most of the stuff he played was more suited to head-nodding than jumping around.

Last night, in contrast, we went to see the Glenn MIller Orchestra at the Norwich Theatre Royal. It has been a long time since I saw a band like this and had forgotten how much I enjoy the big band sound. Favourite solos were from the clarinet, soprano sax (which was bent at the end and not straight) and the cornet. Superb! We were also treated to some Fred and Ginger style ballroom dancing and a guest appearance from Joan Reagan. I had never heard of her but all the oldies had and she must have been in her late 80s. Here is a photo I have found of her and Terry Thomas!

It's Christmas...

...well, nearly! Put our tree up last night so we are feeling all Christmassy. This year we have a new addition to our decoration collection - a festive cow to sit on the top. A gift from our friends Sarah and Nick.

The Wonder Stuff

Went on a road trip down to Essex Uni in Colchester to see my favourite band in the whole wide world. I have seen them many times and, although this wasn't the best gig in terms of atmosphere or banter, I still had a great time. Two days later I still have ringing in my ears and a sore neck but it was worth it!
